Page 4 - The New Home

Comic for August 10, 2008 - Pg4

The hovercar slowed, and Sienna eagerly looked around at what house they might be stopping at. Several good candidates sat along the section of road, including a white and green house with a fountain in the front surrounded by beds of flowers. Or perhaps the earth-toned house with a fenced-in backyard, although she didn’t care much for the boxy dimensions of the house itself. Or maybe the deep blue and white house with the wonderfully shaped trees in the front yard. But, the hovercar turned in the opposite direction, and Sienna turned her head, to be welcomed with the sight of a driveway surrounded with a tangle of weeds, bushes, unpruned and wild trees.

Not a good sign.

Jake immediately opened his door to climb out as soon as the hovercar stopped moving, announcing, “Cool.”

Sienna opened her door while eyeing the wild vegetation, dragging her duffel bag behind her. Of course Jake would say something like that. No doubt, he saw this as a virtual paradise of hidden forts and playgrounds, while she knew she would most likely be given the chore of shaping it up. She looked at the two story house, taking in the overgrown bushes, clinging vines, dirty siding and outer windows. The outer appearance didn’t bode well for what awaited them inside.

Mr. Dentry eyed the grass and house warily as he led the way down the walkway, “Here we are, one of the original homestead homes of Dreamers Cove. This area has become quite the vacation spot over the past few years. I’m sure you and the children will find plenty to do. The house is in good order inside, Ms. Abbot. A few things were shipped or given to other relatives, per Ms. Rosennary’s will. What remains on the property and inside the home belongs to you.”

“Thank you, Mr. Dentry. I appreciate all your law office has done for my Great Aunt’s estate. I like the style of the house. Much different from what they construct now.” Sienna heard her Mom say as they followed Mr. Dentry up to the porch where he stopped to fish around in his suit pockets. Sienna took the time to compare the yard and house to those across the street with their modern architecture and manicured yards.

“The yard is a little overgrown.” Jake said quietly.

“No wonder. Look at how ancient the yardbots are.” Sienna said pointing at a dirty robot as it struggled through the grass and weeds, its tool-tipped arms moving slowly as it tried to tackle a clump of weeds. To her, it looked like the weeds were winning.

Their Mom half turned towards them, “Something for you to tinker with, Sienna.”

Sienna groaned and rolled her eyes, “I knew I would get chores right away.”

“And you can help her, Jake.” At their Mom’s words the smirk that had appeared on Jake’s face promptly disappeared, at which Sienna started grinning instead.

Every day a new thing learned…

First off, the new page is finished and will be up first thing Thursday morning.

Things learned this past month:
1. Text heavy graphics increases file sized much more than expected. I’ll do all I can to keep pages under 150K, but so far if they are compressed much below that the quality really deteriorates.
2. My style has definitely changed in the last few years. Just look at the characters in graphic 1 (from 2005) compared to graphic 2 (new).
3. Hackers are everywhere and apparently don’t have a real life. Instead of spending most of July 4th weekend working on art, instead I was piecing this website back together. Grrrrrr.
4. Monsoons have just started for the season and make me realize anew just how much I miss clouds.

Pardon Our Dust

Well, it turns out Comicshout was just dropped by its creator for various reasons just as I had tweaked the theme the way I wanted. As I didn’t want to get stuck with a dead-end comic script like what happened with Istrip (which I really liked, BTW), I had to go back to researching alternatives. This has now put me at least a week behind.

In the end it came down to only one alternative, and I wasn’t really keen on it: WordPress with the ComicPress theme. To be blunt, it’s been a pain in the neck getting it to do what I want and look like I want. The pluses: Active development and a very active and helpful community to answer questions.

So, here we are, with a new site that still need work, but at least it’s starting to take shape. Now to get busy on the most important part: the relaunched comic! :)
